Hi, It’s enthusiasm time again. Let me know what you think via twitter at @JamieSmartCom, on my Facebook page, or on my blog here.
1. A quote I’m resonating with this week
This week’s quote comes from General Michael V. Hayden, former head of America’s CIA. I heard him being interviewed on Sam Harris’ podcast, and he was talking about Russian interference in the recent US elections. Here’s what he said:
“Covert influence campaigns do not create fractures in a society; they exploit fractures in the society and make them worse.”
2. A book I love
I’ve just finished listening to the audiobook version of On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder, and I enjoyed it so much I bought the paperback. It’s a quick read / listen, but worth our attention at a time when our political landscape is changing rapidly. Highly recommended: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tyranny-Twenty-Lessons-Twentieth-Century/dp/1847924883/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496316600&sr=8-1&keywords=on+tyranny
3. This week’s glimpse of the future
I really want to have a go on this. Apparently the virtual reality simulations that involve walking on highwires and high planks are incredibly realistic. So realistic, in fact, that many people are immobilised and unable to move forward, despite knowing ‘intellectually’ that they’re safe and sound in somebody’s office! https://youtu.be/zhljsCx6Yiw
4. A hilarious movie
My daughters and I went to see the brilliant Mindhorn last weekend, and I nearly cried with laughter. Julian Barratt (star of two of my favourite TV shows, The Mighty Boosh and Nathan Barley) is on hilarious form as a TV detective who gets involved in tracking down a real-life serial killer. Cheesy 70s-spoof brilliance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA5njebTiZY
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
I was speaking at the 3P Conference last week, and I bumped into my good friend, Nick Siddle. He was telling me how much he enjoys these ‘3 minute miracles’, and reminded me of one of my favourite songs of all time. Here’s the original studio version of Suite Judy Blue Eyes by Crosby Stills and Nash. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDEiLImUUM8
That’s it for this week!
Thanks and big love,
Jamie
