Heads up – it’s time for some enthusiasms. Let me know what you think via twitter at @JamieSmartCom, on my Facebook page, or on my blog here.
1. A quote I’m resonating with this week
I was listening to the excellent Sam Harris podcast, Waking Up, this week. Sam was having a conversation and Q&A session with the biologist Bret Weinstein in front of a live audience when he dropped this pearl:
“The first thing to do is to get over the idea that you want to fulfill evolution’s wish for you. It’s not a good wish and in fact it’s an absurd wish because I am not exaggerating to say that every single creature that has ever evolved has the identical self-same purpose which means it can’t be a very good one. If you have the same purpose as a liver fluke and malaria and a fig tree then it’s a pretty generic, uninteresting purpose at best. So the first thing to do is to recognise that we are in a very odd spot evolutionary. Evolution has awarded us the capacity to evaluate our purpose and reject it, which we should do right away. Having rejected it we can substitute other things and that leads right to the question of, “Well, what values actually do unite us?”
2. Why self-belief is over-rated (a video that’s getting a BIG response)
I often work with clients who ask me to help them increase their levels of self-belief. They’re shocked when I tell them, “Self-belief is over-rated. You don’t need self-belief to take action and move forward.”
My good friend Stapho Thienpoint shot and edited this very cool 2-minute video where I unpack this curious and counter intuitive statement. You can watch it here: https://www.facebook.com/JamieSmartCom/videos/10155993946646528/
3. This week’s glimpse of the future
Machine learning and algorithms are playing a HUGE part in our lives, and it’s set to get a thousand-fold bigger. Amazon has launched SageMaker, a service that “enables developers and data scientists to quickly and easily build, train, and deploy machine learning models at any scale”. This changes everything: https://aws.amazon.com/sagemaker/
4. A very cool coaching session
In this coaching demo from the Certified Clarity Coach Training Programme, I coach Claire Russell, who wants to make a decision about whether she’s in the right place with her work and business. In this demo you’ll hear me switching between coaching Claire and unpacking what I’m doing for the audience of coaches, therapists, trainers and consultants. https://www.jamiesmart.com/pcp09/
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
I’m not a huge fan of Christmas pop songs as a rule, but this song is so good I’ll listen to it whatever the time of year. The Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and the late, great Kirsty MacColl sounds as fresh as the day it was written. “The boys of the NYPD choir were singing ‘Galway Bay’, and the bells are ringing out for Christmas day.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9jbdgZidu8
That’s it for this week!
Big love
Jamie

If you want to transition from full-time employment to something more fulfilling and on-purpose for you, you may be a good fit for the next intake of Project Jupiter (starting January 2018). Here’s how you’ll know if you’re right for Jupiter (and vice-versa):
– You are currently in full-time employment, but…
– You want to transition from your job to something more fulfilling and “on-purpose”
– You sense that it’ll probably take 1-3 years to complete the transition, but…
– Your goal hasn’t been getting much closer; it seems to stay the same distance away
– You want to make progress, but lack clarity about either the ‘what’ or the ‘how’
– You know that if you were clear on those, with a solid plan, you’d do what it takes to make it happen
– You’ve been thinking about it for long enough, and you’re ready to do something about it NOW
If that’s you, email Nikki at info@jamiesmart.com and type “Project Jupiter” in the subject line.
