I’m particularly enthusiastic this week! Let me know what you think via twitter at @jamiesmartcom, on my Facebook page here, or in the comments section. At the end, I’ll tell you how you can get one of your #enthusiasms featured in a future edition of The Thursday Enthusiasms (TTE).
1. A quotation I’m reflecting on this week
I was listening to one of my favourite podcasts, Song Exploder, as the interviewer spoke to the members of the 1990s alt.rock band, Garbage. Singer and songwriter, Shirley Manson, said something which I really loved, and that I’ve been reflecting on ever since:
“The less married you are to ideas, the more you have."
2. A video that chimes with my own views on “political correctness”
I’ve been increasingly bothered by the phenomenon of “trigger words”, and the degree to which “political correctness” is reinforcing the idea that people are fragile, weak and can be injured by words. Here’s a very well-thought-out and brief video from John Cleese that pretty much sums up my take on it.
3. A conference I’m speaking at
The annual 3PUK Conference kicks starts this Sunday. Many of my friends and colleagues are going to be there, including the wonderful Jan and Chip Chipman who have just spent a week with me leading the annual Clarity Life Transformation Retreat. I’m going to be speaking at the conference about how my work as a coach changed with the principles. My session is the afternoon of Monday 16th May. You can either get a 3-day pass or a 1-day ticket here and you can get a discount if you use the code clarity10.
4. A movie I love
Last week I shared a Patrick Stewart sketch inspired by the film The Life of Brian. I still remember the day I went to the cinema to see the movie. I was fourteen, and I laughed so hard that my ribcage hurt. I didn’t realise a movie could be that funny. The Life of Brian caused all kinds of controversy, but it’s managed to stand the test of time. This remains one of the funniest films I’ve ever seen.
5. This week’s 3-minute miracle
There are some songs which serve as a backdrop to life. I grew up in Canada in the 1970s, a country I used to refer to as “the land that pop forgot”. My childhood was spent listening to rock; heavy rock, country rock, hard rock, acid rock, prog rock etc. The Band (Bob Dylan’s backing band) were one of those groups whose songs always seemed to be playing. This week’s 3-minute miracle is their wonderful song, The Weight.
That’s it for this week. If you have questions, suggestions or want to let me know what you’re enthusiastic about, just tweet one of yours and put my twitter name @jamiesmartcom and the #Enthusiasms hashtag in there so I can find it. If I’m enthusiastic about something you’re enthusiastic about, it might just get featured in a future TTE.
Big love
Jamie
By the way, if you’re a transformation professional, then you may be a good fit for something I’m doing next month. Here’s what I’m looking for:
– You have at least one year’s experience of working with clients (either paid, pro-bono or both)
– You probably charge by the hour, but want to use a “coaching package” model to increase your income & make it more consistent
– You have space in your practice to work with at least one longer term contract client, starting in May
– You’re an enthusiastic, friendly people-person
– You have a coachable spirit, and are willing to step out of your comfort zone if necessary, and
– You can keep a secret
If that’s you, then just email me at jsmart@jamiesmart.com, and let me know where you’re located and a little about yourself (if you don’t know what to tell me about, look at the list above for inspiration). Make the subject line “Project Glasswing TTE”. I’ll be choosing people in the next couple of weeks. Talk to you soon!
Big love
Jamie
