I’m particularly enthusiastic this week! Let me know what you think via twitter at @jamiesmartcom, on my Facebook page here, or in the comment section. At the end, I’ll tell you how you can get one of your #enthusiasms featured in a future edition of The Thursday Enthusiasms (TTE).
1. A quotation I’m reflecting on this week
I was listening to a great podcast episode where James Altucher interviewed Brian Grazer. Grazer is the producer of tons of films you’ve seen (including Splash, A Beautiful Mind, and 8-mile as well as loads of Jim Carrey movies). The guy is an incredible thinker, and something he said really jumped out at me:
"When you communicate, if you're not igniting feeling you're not really communicating, you're not really reaching somebody"
2. The Podcast I heard it on
Here’s the highly recommended episode of the James Altucher Show I heard it on… Brian Grazer: How a Curious Mind Creates An Original Idea.
3. A gizmo I’m experimenting with
The Jawbone UP2 is a wearable device (an unobtrusive bracelet) that I’ve been wearing on my wrist for the last couple of weeks. It measures a variety of things, including number of steps taken, number of hours sleep, etc. It tells me that yesterday I took 8,084 steps (despite being in a meeting all day), and that last night I managed to get 7 hours and 13 minutes sleep. The bracelet communicates with an app on my phone via bluetooth. The app gives me updates, health tips etc. I predict wearables and this kind of feedback being a big part of the future of health.
4. Richard Feynman on scientific method
If you’ve heard the phrase “scientific method” but want to understand how it works, or… you’ve heard the name “Richard Feynman” and wonder what all the fuss is about, check out this 10 minute video from 50 years ago; it’s wonderful.
5. This week’s 3-minute miracle (it’s actually more like 13 minutes)
When I was a teenager, I loved the prog-rock band, “Yes”. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea – I’ve heard singer Jon Anderson’s voice described as being “like a choirboy on acid”, and lots of people find their music self-indulgent and overblown. But I was always too busy being enthralled by the virtuosity to worry about that. Steve Howe is still one of my favourite guitarists of all time. It’s actually more like a 13-minute miracle (I love the moment at 1:50 when they drop from country-jazz-intro to the main theme), but here’s one of my favourite tracks, the live version of Yours Is No Disgrace.
By the way, if you’re a transformation professional, then you may be a good fit for something I’m doing next month. We’ve filled nearly 2/3 of the places, so we’ve got 14 seats left. Here’s what I’m looking for:
– You have at least one year’s experience of working with clients (either paid, pro-bono or both)
– You probably charge by the hour, but want to use a “coaching package” model to increase your income & make it more consistent
– You have space in your practice to work with at least one longer term contract client, starting next month
– You’re an enthusiastic, friendly people-person
– You have a coachable spirit, and are willing to step out of your comfort zone if necessary, and
– You can keep a secret
If that’s you, then just email me at jsmart@jamiesmart.com, and let me know where you’re located and a little about yourself (if you don’t know what to tell me about, look at the list above for inspiration). Make the subject line “Project Glasswing TTE”. I’ll be choosing people in the next couple of weeks. Talk to you soon!
That’s it for this week. If you have questions, suggestions or want to let me know what you’re enthusiastic about, just tweet one of yours and put my twitter name @jamiesmartcom and the #Enthusiasms hashtag in there so I can find it. If I’m enthusiastic about something you’re enthusiastic about, it might just get featured in a future TTE.
Big love
Jamie
