It’s enthusiasm time again… Let me know what you think via twitter at @jamiesmartcom, on my Facebook page here, or in the comments section. At the end, I’ll tell you how you can get one of your #enthusiasms featured in a future edition of The Thursday Enthusiasms (TTE).
1. A quotation I’m reflecting on this week
I heard someone mention this African proverb on one of the numerous podcasts I listen to. While I don’t remember who said it, the truth of it really struck me. Over the past year, we’ve been growing #TeamClarity, and I feel really grateful to be working with such a passionate, committed and talented group of people. Since I went public with the mission to end chronic psychological suffering globally by 2030, one thing’s become abundantly clear: Team is essential.
"If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
2. One of my heroes
I’ve always loved Frank Zappa – his music, his attitude, his guitar playing. Zappa is like a poster-child for authenticity, creativity and artistic integrity. He’s a great interview subject, and particularly “on the nose” in this interview with MTV (his take on music video “saturation” is particularly penetrating).
3. A great friend, inspiration and source of wisdom
As you may know, I spent many years exploring the domain of NLP and hypnosis. One of the people I met in my travels is a great friend, Michael Perez. Michael is one of a handful of people whose Facebook posts I pay close attention to, because he regularly finds extremely cool stuff to share. Not only that, but he’s incredibly skilled, wise and insightful. Recently, while in Lanzarote, I had a tooth infection, and was in a degree of pain that was immune to all the painkillers I was given (see pic of me at my dentist for proof). Say what you like about the good old days, but I’d still take modern dentistry over the old fashioned kind every time. Michael was the guy I turned to for hypnotic pain control (something I’m extremely grateful for). He’s the real deal. If you want to find out more about Michael and what he does, go to https://www.facebook.com/michaelperezhypnosis/.
4. Abundance and the elimination of unemployment
The rapid and radical changes that are being wrought by technology mean that countless jobs are on-track to be replaced by computers and robots. What’s the solution? One of the front-runners is the idea of a universal basic income (UBI). This transformative concept would mean that everyone gets a standard sum of money (enough at a minimum to eliminate poverty). This, regardless of their level of need. We’re going to need policies like this to keep pace with the speed of technological transformation.
5. This week’s 3-minute miracle
When I first heard Tom Waits, I loved his 60-Bensons vocal style and gritty lyrics. I’ve owned many of his albums over the years, but somehow managed to miss this smoky gem until just a couple of months ago. This is The Heart of Saturday Night.
That’s it for this week. If you have questions, suggestions or want to let me know what you’re enthusiastic about, just tweet one of yours and put my twitter name @jamiesmartcom and the #Enthusiasms hashtag in there so I can find it. If I’m enthusiastic about something you’re enthusiastic about, it might just get featured in a future TTE.
Big love
Jamie
