Here they come again! Let me know what you think via twitter at @jamiesmartcom, on my Facebook page here, or in the comments section. At the end, I’ll tell you how you can get one of your #enthusiasms featured in a future edition of The Thursday Enthusiasms (TTE).
1. A quotation I’m reflecting on this week
I was leading the final module of the 2015/16 Clarity Trainer Training Programme today and I happened to share a quote by the oft-maligned sex guru, tax-evader, and thoroughly mischievous fellow the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (aka Osho). It’s from my favourite talk by him, called “The Goose In the Bottle” (originally shared with me by dear friend and wonderful neo-Ericksonian Hypnotist, Michael Watson.) Here it is:
“You are enlightened… you are buddhas… pretending not to be… pretending to be somebody else…
And my whole work here is… to expose you…”
2. A bonkers book I love
Sixteen years ago, a buddy of mine said (and I quote), “Dude! I found this book, and you’re going to LOVE it. It’s called Courage: The Joy of Living Dangerously” The book is by the self-same Osho of the quote above, and my friend was right. I loved it and I still do. This one wins the prize for “best title ever”. Osho seemed to me to be pretty much bonkers by the end of his life, but his earlier stuff has some real gold in it. BTW, as far as I can tell, the name “Osho” seems to have been granted / branded posthumously. He had a big ashram in Oregon, a few hundred miles south of where I grew up, where he collected a fleet of Rolls Royces and snorted laughing gas. Definitely “on his own railroad”.
3. A meta-video that made me laugh
I love it when people are able to pull the (largely invisible) structure out of an oft-repeated form, and make it visible. I’ve previously shared Charlie Brooker’s hilarious meta-masterpiece, “How to report the news” clip (well worth watching again, even if you’ve seen it before), but Pat Kelly’s talk on being a thought leader gives a glimpse under the hood of the TED Talk. Funny and well-observed.
4. A breathtakingly good psychological thriller
The movie Room is incredible. Great script, fantastic acting, wonderfully directed. Enough adjectives and adverbs. Watch Room
5. This week’s 3-minute miracle
The American artist, Beck consistently manages to push boundaries and create fresh and new out of things you’ve heard a million times before. I love his work, especially the brilliant Sunday Sun (one of my favourite songs).
That’s it for this week. If you have questions, suggestions or want to let me know what you’re enthusiastic about, just tweet one of yours and put my twitter name @jamiesmartcom and the #Enthusiasms hashtag in there so I can find it. If I’m enthusiastic about something you’re enthusiastic about, it might just get featured in a future TTE.
Big love
Jamie
