I love Frank Zappa. I fell in love with his music the very first time I heard it when I was 14 years old. I also loved his irreverent take on the world, and his total commitment to his authentic vision. I haven’t been listening to his stuff much lately, but I think it’s about time. He and one of my other heroes, Bill Hicks, died within a few months of each other; early 1994 was tough. I miss them both. Here’s a Frankie favourite:

I was in the back of an Uber on my way to deliver the first module of the Clarity Mentoring Programme a couple of weeks ago, when the classic Bob Marley track, Three Little Birds came on the radio. I’ve loved this song for decades, but I heard it in a completely new light this time. Back when I first listened to the song, I thought it was about circumstances, and a general message of positivity – a kind of “be positive, everything’s going to turn out ok.” But as I listened to it for the umpteenth time, I heard a different message; your true self – who you really – are is already everything you’ve ever longed for. There’s nothing wrong with you, and there never has been. And you don’t need anything before you can be alright. Who you really are is already alright.

It’s nearly 7 years since he passed away, and the world is poorer for his absence. There are many of his views I disagree with, but Hitchens seems pretty on point with this one (from one of his electric debate performances):
