"Integrity has no need of rules."
Albert Camus
The other day, a friend asked my views on “developing integrity”. He explained that he was involved in a discussion with a group of coaches who were each in the process of creating a “set of rules” to live by. Here’s what I said: “If you create rules to live by, sooner or later you'll encounter the situation where wisdom will have you break them. Living in accordance with wisdom is the ultimate integrity.” In this article, we’re going to be looking at what that means.
Rules can be really helpful when it comes to playing games with others. They give us shared agreement on the boundaries and objectives of the game. Whether the game is football, marriage or business, an agreed set of rules create a context for us to play with others. But when it comes to playing the game of life, there are no rules. There are, however, some things worth understanding:
Understanding 1) You’re always living in the feeling of the principle of thought taking form, moment to moment. While we often get tricked into believing our experience is coming from ‘out there’, it’s only ever coming from within.
Understanding 2) Who you really are is the energy of the universe, taking form in a variety of ways. The goal of the game of life is for you to remember who you really are, and experience the fact of this.
Understanding 3) You’re connected to a source of wisdom, guidance and fresh new thinking. This deep intelligence can give you what you need, when you need it.
The more deeply you "grasp" these understandings, the more love, peace and wellbeing you’re going to experience. Wisdom will guide you expertly from situation to situation.
