JST 150 – Having The Courage to Ask for What You Want

“How would your world start to change if you were willing to ask for what you want?” It turns out that if you’re willing to ask for what you want, new possibilities emerge, and you may be surprised at how often you get what you’ve asked for. You may discover that it’s easier to get what you want than you may ever have suspected. In this article, we’re going to explore the power of asking for what you want.

Last week, my team and I experimented with a technology called Thunderclap. Here’s the idea: it’s sort of like a Kickstarter campaign, but instead of having a financial target, you have a *social* target. We started with a goal of 100 people signing up to support our Thunderclap for RESULTS. If we hit the target, Thunderclap would share a RESULTS message to everyone’s Facebook / Twitter feed at the same time last Friday (RESULTS Day). But after we started the campaign, things took an unexpected turn…

Within 24 hours, we’d hit our goal, and had a social reach of an astonishing 146,313 people. And that’s when it hit me; we could aim for a social reach of a MILLION people. The target seemed impossibly high, and we only had 3 days to achieve it, but lots of people were adding their support. I posted screenshots of our Thunderclap statistics, and lots of people jumped on board. As people added their support, our social reach grew. Sometimes by a few hundred people, and sometimes by 20,000 or 30,000. Then I had an idea; I reached out to my friend Bruce Van Horn. Bruce has a social reach of hundreds of thousands of people. I asked him to support our thunderclap and he did! Our social reach suddenly jumped to over half a million people. As we approached the last 24 hours of the campaign, we were at nearly 800,000 people. I did the math, and realised we’d need to add 9,000 people per hour to hit the million. I’d been asking for 3 days, and people had been responding to my requests. With 12 hours to go, we were nearly at 900,000, and I asked again. A new friend, Melonie Dodaro said “I’ll put you over 1,000,000”, and like that it was done.

When you’re willing to ask for what you want, you give other people the opportunity to respond in ways that may surprise and delight you. So here are some questions you might like to ponder:

– What would you ask for if it didn’t matter whether you got it or not?
– What would you ask for if it didn’t matter what other people thought of you?
– What would you ask for if you weren’t afraid of getting what you’d asked for?
– What would you ask for if you were open to the possibility that your request could be granted?

Ask, and you might be surprised at what comes your way. Our Thunderclap massively exceeded my thoughts of what could be possible.
