This week’s a big one. Please let me know what you think via twitter at @jamiesmartcom, on my Facebook page here, or in the comment section. At the end, I’ll tell you how you can get one of your #enthusiasms featured in a future edition.
1. A quote that’s really hitting me this week
On Monday I read that David Bowie has passed away. I was watching the excellent movie Foxcatcher at the weekend, and Bowie’s classic Fame was played in the middle of the film. I first heard it when I was 10 years old, living in Canada, and I loved it right away. Shortly after I read about Bowie’s death, I saw the tweet below, and it really struck me, and gave me an idea for the rest of this week’s enthusiasms. The tweet comes from Dean Podestá (@JeSuisDean)…
“If you're ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie.”
2. A movie I really enjoyed
So I mentioned that I heard Fame the other night while watching the movie Foxcatcher. The film was really good: great performances from Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell. Solid storytelling and direction. The movie was based on a (quite shocking) true story, so if you want to watch it, don’t do any background research first or it’ll spoil it for you. Here’s the trailer.
3. A 90-second interview clip that reminds me why science fiction is cool
Writers such as Arthur C Clarke, William Gibson and Neal Stephenson have quite literally envisioned the future that we are now living and engineering into. I have huge respect for this visionary ability. Watch as Arthur C Clarke predicts the internet in 1974.
4. A book that’s blowing my box
If this week’s quote gave you a moment’s pause, you might enjoy Robert Lanza’s brilliant book Biocentrism. In it, he suggests that we carry space and time around with us like a tortoise carries its shell. This could mean that it’s not just good fortune that you’ve managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie! What Lanza’s pointing to is very consistent with what I’m pointing to in CLARITY and The Little Book of Clarity. You can get Biocentrism here.
5. This week’s 3-minute miracle
Of course it’s David Bowie’s Fame (with John Lennon on backing vocals!) Enjoy…
That’s it for this week. If you have questions, suggestions or want to let me know what you’re enthusiastic about, just tweet one of yours and put my twitter name @jamiesmartcom and the #Enthusiasms hashtag in there so I can find it. If I’m enthusiastic about something you’re enthusiastic about, it might just get featured in a future TTE.
Big love
Jamie
