Guess what? I’m enthusiastic. Don’t tell anyone. However, you can let me know what you think via twitter at @jamiesmartcom, on my Facebook page here, or in the comments section.
1. A quotation I’m reflecting on this week
Edward Bernays was the nephew of Sigmund Freud, and is widely regarded as “the father of public relations”. I first learned about him in Adam Curtis’ excellent documentary, The Century of the Self. Here are the first four sentences of Edward Bernays’ book, Propaganda:
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organised.”
2. A brilliant documentary
The Trap. By the aforementioned (and wonderful) Adam Curtis. This film explores game theory, RD Laing, the roots of the DSM V (the diagnostic “bible” of the psychiatric profession) and it’s links with cold war paranoia. This is fascinating stuff.
3. A thing of rare beauty
Jacq MO in Australia shared one of her enthusiasms with me, and it’s a thing of rare beauty called Sepakuma. Sepakuma is the art of expressing your true self through whichever medium you see fit, and I love the way this guy’s doing it.
4. A book I’m really enjoying on audio
Chaos Monkeys: Inside the Silicon Valley Money Machine by Antonio Garcia Martinez is not just exceedingly well-written. It’s a rare glimpse inside one of the most creative, competitive and cut-throat domains in the world. I’m listening to the audiobook and enjoying the hell out of it.
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
I’ve loved the DJ Sasha since I first went clubbing (for real) in the early 90s. His collaboration with John Digweed – The Renaissance Collection – is still one of my favourite things. Here’s Bring on the Night-time feat. Ultraista from his album Scene-delete.
One last thing: Just over three years ago, I launched the first ever Certified Clarity Coach Training Programme. We’ve just completed the 3rd year, and we’re building a close-knit community of highly-skilled, Certified Clarity Coaches and Practitioners. As well as the students who join us live in-person, we’ve got people training with us from all around the world (from as far afield as Brazil and Australia) via our state-of-the-art virtual technology. So I’m happy to announce the 2016 / 2017 programme, and we’ve made some changes. The programme is by application only, and the selection criteria is strict. We’ve just opened the door for applications, and we’ve put a strict limit on numbers (the first 29 people have already booked their places) – so register your interest now to make sure your hat is in the ring. The price goes up at the end of August, so look sharp!
