It’s enthusiasm time again. Let me know what you think via twitter at @JamieSmartCom, on my Facebook page, or in the comments below.
1. A quote I’m resonating with this week
This one comes from David Krakauer, Professor of Complex Systems at the Santa Fe Institute (I heard Sam Harris interviewing him on the Waking Up podcast). It struck me that his point about celestial mechanics is what we’re on the verge of with psychology today:
“Before Kepler revolutionized our understanding of celestial mechanics, we had armillary spheres with all these epicycles and deferents explaining—incorrectly—the circular motion of a celestial mass. It took a while for us to realize that there was a very compact, elegant way of describing them. And it could be that for many complex phenomena, there is a very elegant, compact way of describing them. For many others, I don’t think that will be the case.”
2. An extraordinary documentary
This week, I watched the film “The Gatekeepers”, a documentary about Israel’s anti-terrorist division, the Shin Bet. Through interviews with the Shin Bet’s leaders for the past half-century, the film paints a vivid picture and comes to some unexpected conclusions. Highly recommended. Here’s the trailer to whet your appetite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdMjr8cuEy8
3. This week’s glimpse into the future
Yesterday I was in Scotland to do a keynote speech for the IT company, Hewlett Packard. One of the things I talked about was the 3 essential qualities that make your work “computer proof” (ie. The things that make it hard for a computer to put you out of a job). One of them is creativity (here’s a Quartz article about it https://qz.com/882779/creativity-could-stop-robots-from-automating-workers-out-of-jobs/. I covered all 3 in my Facebook Live this morning, Computer-proof: 3 Essential Qualities For The Future of Your Work. You can watch it here: https://www.facebook.com/JamieSmartCom/videos/10154970961061528/
4. A hauntingly beautiful film
Many years ago, I watched the film “A Skin Too Few” about the legendary British singer-songwriter, Nick Drake. As I watched the movie, I was captivated by the beautiful songs playing all the way through it. You can watch the film on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrmR_F5XgwQ
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
One of my favourite Nick Drake songs is Time Has Told Me. Extraordinary stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cche-h83qNQ
That’s it!
Thanks and big love,
Jamie
