It’s enthusiasm time again. Let me know what you think via twitter at @JamieSmartCom, on my Facebook page, or in the comments below.
1. A quote I’m resonating with this week
I’m reading Global Brain, another masterwork from Howard Bloom (author of the brilliant “tunnel-busting” tome The Lucifer Principle). This line got my attention:
“K.R.L. Hall has said that baboon groups provide “the essential setting for each and every act of learning by the individual…the group is the basic unit for… learning processes.”
In short, baboons are more successful than the wily chimpanzees because their troops are better collective learning machines.”
2. An audiobook I’m loving
I love Howard Bloom’s extremely well-informed and big picture perspective on things. He used to be a music-industry publicist for singers such as Prince, Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, but his passion was for evolutionary biology and psychology. His brilliant book Global Brain: The Evolution of Mass Mind From The Big Bang To The 21st Century is well worth checking out.
3. This week’s glimpse into the future
In the final chapter of my Sunday Times bestselling book, RESULTS: Think Less, Achieve More, I look at what it’s going to take to prosper in the “transformation economy”. One of the biggest changes on the near horizon is the replacement of numerous jobs by artificial intelligence. And while the immediate focus has been around factory robots and self-driving cars, some of the most susceptible jobs are actually white-collar roles. The first signs of this are already happening in Japan, as insurance company Fukoku Mutual replaces 34 insurance claim workers with IBM Watson Explorer. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2017/01/worried-about-ai-taking-your-job-its-already-happening-in-japan?utm_content=buffer59da5&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
4. A Korean Movie I Really Enjoyed
I love horror movies, and I am particularly fond of a number of Korean films (Park Chan-wook’s wonderful movie “Oldboy” is one of my favourites). The film The Wailing is a beautifully filmed, tightly plotted supernatural horror / thriller. Well worth a couple of hours of your time if you like being freaked out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43uAputjI4k
5. This week’s 3 minute miracle
Normally I use this for one of my favourite pop songs, but this week we’re doing something different. My dear friend Andy Duncan turned me on to this video by Wintergatan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUU8joBb1Q . This amazing marble machine uses 2000 marbles plus assorted gizmodics to create something incredibly beautiful. Enjoy!
That’s it!
Thanks and big love,
Jamie
