I’m reading Global Brain, another masterwork from Howard Bloom (author of the brilliant “tunnel-busting” tome The Lucifer Principle). This line got my attention:

“K.R.L. Hall has said that baboon groups provide “the essential setting for each and every act of learning by the individual…the group is the basic unit for… learning processes.”

1. A quote I’m resonating with this week
The author Terry Pratchett was someone who had a deep understanding of people and our love of stories. In his book, The Science of Discworld, he said something I still love reading and re-reading. The last phrase, “…stories have a clarity of structure that does not exist in the messiness of the real world” is one that has always stayed with me. Here’s the passage in full:

“We learn to appreciate stories as children. The child’s mind is quick and powerful, but uncontrolled and unsophisticated. Stories appeal to it, and adults rapidly discovered that a story can put an idea into a child’s head like nothing else can. Stories are easy to remember, both for teller and listener. As that child grows to adulthood, the love of stories remains. An adult has to be able to tell stories to the next generation of children, or the culture does not propagate. And an adult needs to be able to tell stories to other adults, such as their boss or their mate, because stories have a clarity of structure that does not exist in the messiness of the real world.” Read More →

This episode is a little different from the usual structure. It is a recording of a conversation I’ve had with Jørgen Rasmussen. Jørgen is the creator of Provocative Hypnosis, and is the author of the book of the same name, and the book Provocative Suggestions. He’s created waves in the with his “no holds barred” interventions, and has spent the last 13 years seeing clients full time. And one of the interesting things about Jørgen is that he describes himself as a “contrarian change artist”. This is the 3rd of these conversations we’ve had over the past few years, so I may release the earlier ones at a later date.

I’ve spent the past few days with my dear friend, colleague and mentor Keith Blevens, PhD. Keith and his partner Valda Monroe were the people who introduced me to the “single paradigm” understanding of the principles behind clarity; a way of thinking about it that has simplified and clarified my work, and increased my impact as a coach, educator and communicator.

This weekend, I had a deeper insight into these principles when Keith said “this is a paradigm of no exceptions”. I reflected on this simple statement. On the one hand, I already “knew” this. But on the other hand I saw something deeper. So let’s start by exploring this simple statement:

This one comes from David Krakauer, Professor of Complex Systems at the Santa Fe Institute (I heard Sam Harris interviewing him on the Waking Up podcast). It struck me that his point about celestial mechanics is what we’re on the verge of with psychology today:

“Before Kepler revolutionized our understanding of celestial mechanics, we had armillary spheres with all these epicycles and deferents explaining—incorrectly—the circular motion of a celestial mass. It took a while for us to realize that there was a very compact, elegant way of describing them.
