You may not have realised it until now, but digital technology is one of your best friends if you want to grow a thriving practice as a coach, therapist or other transformation professional. Today, communications tools like Skype and Zoom mean you can have deeply connected conversations with people anywhere in the world and achieve the same impact as if you were working together in the same room.

Stop and think about that for a moment… Your next (or even your first) client could be anywhere on the planet. ‘You’re going to have to raise your game. . . ’ It was the end of the first hour of a one-to-one coaching intensive with Jim Lewcock, CEO of The Specialist Works. We were just about to go for a break when Jim dropped his bombshell, ‘You’re just regurgitating your book; you’re going to have to raise your game’. I thanked him for being forthright with me, and said I’d reflect on what he’d said. We were at a serene and luxurious hotel in the Surrey countryside, but as I started walking around the grounds, I felt anything but tranquil. What was I going to do? During a recent programme, I was demonstrating a simple approach to enrolling high-value clients in front of the group. I worked with the prospective client for 15-20 minutes and got their permission to come back to them with a proposal.

The world is changing fast. We’re living through a time of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity; a time of massive transformation. And none of us is a stranger to transformation. We’ve all been through a variety of transitions in our lives: from childhood to adulthood; from student to wage-earner; from being single to being in a relationship. And while some of those transitions have had ‘external triggers’ (E.g. becoming old enough to go to school), some of them have an ‘internal trigger’.
