A wonderful bit from lecture 4 of Grayson Perry’s wonderful Reith Lectures. While he’s talking about artists, I can’t think of many vocations or callings where this wouldn’t apply.

“Most of the successful artists I’ve met, they’re very disciplined. They turn up on time, they put in the hours and that idea of us all being a bit chaotic and shaky, I think it’s a myth . Artists are doers. They don’t ‘want to be’ artists; they don’t wannabe artists they want to make art. They enjoy making art. And this reminds me of a quote from Kierkegaard. Sam Harris’ podcast this week was a conversation with David Frum and Andrew Sullivan that covered a wide range of topics, including the incredible communication power that we each now hold in the form of our smartphones, and how we’re all part of the media now:

“You’re carrying in your pocket more communication power than Walter Cronkite ever had at his disposal, and you have some responsibilities on how you use it. And I think one of the things we’ve seen in 2016 is that’s sort of a new thought to people. In my first book, CLARITY, I quoted from Charlie Chaplin’s beautiful speech from the great dictator. I opined that artists are “the canaries in humanity’s coal mine, able to sense our emerging patterns and potentials long before they be- come obvious to everyone else.” For the past week, I’ve been listening to Grayson Perry’s wonderful Reith Lectures from 2013 and he came out with a quote about art that resonates deeply with me (and is much more concise than my statement). I’m still enjoying the hell out of Nicholas Nassim Taleb’s book, Fooled By Randomness. It’s well worth reading. Here’s the quote from it that’s giving me the most pause for reflection so far:

“Remember that nobody accepts randomness in his own success; only his failure.”

2. The search is over, except when it isn’t (a keynote speech I really enjoyed giving)
A couple of years ago, I gave the opening talk at the Unlimited conference in Helsinki, Finland. The conference was organised by one of my former students, the excellent Niko Leppanen, and it was a really wonderful event. The audience included many people who were brand new to the principles behind clarity, so I speak about the keys to resilience, performance and releasing your potential. I explain the subtle tricks of the mind that cause stress and anxiety, and point out the simple insights and realisations that can have you stop searching and start finding what everybody is looking for: fulfilment, peace of mind and enlightened success. The session was called ‘The Search is Over (except when it isn’t)’ and I really enjoyed it. I’m reading Nicholas Nassim Taleb’s book, Fooled by Randomness at the moment, and I’m really enjoying it. Here’s a quote from it that’s really resonating with me:

“Any reading of the history of science would show that almost all the smart things that have been proven by science appeared like lunacies at the time they were first discovered.

Try to explain to a Times (of London) journalist in 1905 that time slows down when one travels (even the Nobel committee never granted Einstein the prize on account of his insight on special relativity). I’ve long been a fan of the raunchily brilliant American comedian, Doug Stanhope. He was interviewed on the Joe Rogan Podcast last week, and I really enjoyed listening to him. During the interview, he spoke about his audience of choice:

“I paid my dues – I made my bones to have a small niche fan base that are unoffendable.”

2. An interview I’m pumped about
A couple of weeks ago I was interviewed by Dave Asprey of Bulletproof Coffee fame. The episode just landed and I’m really excited. Why?

I’m a big fan of the Exponential Wisdom podcast with Dan Sullivan and Peter Diamandis. They’re both very focused on the different ways that exponential technologies are transforming our world. In this week’s episode they’re talking about human longevity, and Diamandis made a really powerful statement:

“I think of retirement as a leading cause of death because you give up and you slow down and it’s just game over.”

2. An audiobook I’m really enjoying
I’m listening to Hitch-22, the autobiography of Christopher Hitchens, read by the author. Whatever you think of Hitchens’ theological views, this is great stuff. He’s as articulate as he is brilliant, and it’s wonderful to hear him tell so many fascinating tales from his life. I’m currently reading “Hitch-22”, Christopher Hitchens’ autobiography. He opens with a quote from Richard Dawkins’ book “Unweaving The Rainbow”. Whatever you think of Dawkins and his beliefs, this is fantastic writing:

“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton.
