This week, I listened to a fascinating interview with Jordan Peterson, a clinical psychologist and a professor at the University of Toronto. Peterson is a somewhat controversial figure because of his views on a variety of subjects including “trigger words”, “safe spaces”, “gender pronouns” etc. Details of the interview are below, but here’s a quote that jumped out at me:
“You don’t make the world and its horrors smaller; you make the person and their capacity to deal with horror larger. You encourage them, you strengthen them. That’s what you do at a university. You arm people with arguments, you hone their intellect, you help them learn to write so they can martial their arguments. I listen to lots of interview-based podcasts, and one of my favourites is Recode Media with Peter Kafka. On a recent episode, he was interviewing music industry insider, Bob Lefsetz, author of the Lefsetz Letter, and I heard Lefsetz say something that struck me at a deep level. Here it is:
“Do not buy the famous books of people for advice. They are completely different people from you.
The only way you can make it is if you dig down deep and find out what’s special about you, and go have a lot of losses.
There’s one alternative: which is you can become a computer engineer or you can go to an Ivy League School and
work for a bank and you can make money. Other than that, all bets are off.

Chapter 19 of RESULTS features a story about John Wilkes and how he negotiated a 5-day per week job down to 3 days per week, while getting exactly the same salary! These days, he’s the co-founder of the conversion rate optimisation agency, Somebody Digital. I did a Facebook Live broadcast in the Exponential Practice Professional Group last night looking at the whole domain of beliefs / grounding around money, wealth and abundance. I shared this quote from Lynne Twist. Lynne worked as Chief Fundraising Officer for The Hunger Project, and raised over 200 million dollars in the process. She’s spent time with some of the wealthiest people on the planet, and some of the poorest. Here’s what she said:
